UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
W.K. Kellogg Community Health Scholar Program, Postdoctoral Fellow, 2000-2001

Addressed environmental and social inequity in rural North Carolina using a community-based participatory approach to develop research and intervention programs; worked with residents who were relocated after the 1999 flooding to systematically document the effects of displacement on health and well-being; results and policy recommendations presented to representatives of federal, state, and local agencies and organizations; organized the 3rd Annual North Carolina Environmental Justice Summit; a participant of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council meetings reviewing Executive Order 12898 and Title VI implementation.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Michigan Center for the Environment and Children's Health, Research Assistant, 1998-1999

Researched and designed a 35-item observational checklist used to collect data on environmental conditions in Detroit neighborhoods, including vandalism, illegal dumping, and industrial facilities; assisted with all phases of data collection, including development of checklist, pre-testing, training of data collectors, construction of scales, analysis, and interpretation of results; developed training manual and helped train 15 community members to administer a household survey to 450 households; project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

World Health Organization, International Asthma Council (IAC)
Guidelines Implementation Project, Rapporteur, 1998

Researched and co-wrote the WHO IAC guidelines implementation document for asthma prevention and treatment in less developed countries, receiving assistance from IAC; participated in finalizing the document at the WHO IAC meeting in Toronto, Canada.

Urban Research Center
Research Assistant, 1996-1999

Organized and facilitated the meetings of the Community Organizing committee of the Village Health Worker Project; worked with local organizations and the Community Organizing committee to plant and maintain a community garden; collected, analyzed, and interpreted qualitative data using inductive analyses from community and organizational key informant interviews; participated in monthly meetings with members of the community and local organizations; designed an assessment instrument to evaluate the Village Health Worker lay health advisor training sessions; co-authored papers and poster sessions with project investigators; project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

University of Colorado School of Medicine
HIV/AIDS Prevention Project, Research Assistant, 1992-1994

Administered the DSM-III questionnaire to assess risk behaviors of Denver's homeless and runaway youth in an HIV/AIDS study; conducted in-depth interviews with study participants to evaluate program effectiveness; presented results in professional meetings and journals; project funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
